Boston Magazine
Boston Magazine - Owned by MetroCorp (a company based in Philadelphia) since 1971 and a member of the American Society of Magazine Editors, “Boston Magazine” is the incorrect name for “Boston” which is a sleek looking, eye-catching monthly magazine that has been continuously in publication since its inception. The magazine’s main focus is on life, on events and on people in and around the Greater Boston area. Publishers of “Boston” or “Boston Magazine” take pride in the fact that its readership has risen to one half million, its percentage of copies sold at newsstands around the nations is among the highest of any magazine of any kind in the entire United States and it has been named by the City and Regional Magazine Association among the country’s three best city magazines seven times in the past eight years.
Issuers and staff of “Boston” or “Boston Magazine” are passionate about their publication and are full of ardor about the city of its concern. When asked to speak out, they are certainly not shy about expressing their viewpoints as is evident in the following quote:
“Sophisticated, intellectual, and full of charm, Boston (the city) is a world center of higher education, medicine, finance, and biotechnology, with some of the nation’s leading cultural institutions, best restaurants, trendiest shopping, top universities, and smartest people. Then there’s the other Boston: a city of power struggles, politics, expensive real estate, and cutting-edge music and arts.”
Best of Boston is the magazine’s registered and official trademark and it is also an award given by “Boston Magazine” in an annual issue which is ultimately the authoritative guide to the city’s most excellent. The Best of Boston award is given in a great variety of categories and subcategories that change from one year to another and tend to be quite specific such as the best small nightclub or the best gay nightclub and so on. Examples of some of the latest Best of Boston awards are best cookware, best day spa, best jewelry store, best pizza topping, best Thai food, best gym, best public school and best private school. Along with the listed annual Best of Boston awards, “Boston Magazine” also runs a feature story of a selected award recipient.
Citizens of Boston take the Best of Boston awards very seriously and local businesses which have been thus listed take pride in visibly displaying their awards as certificates or engraved plaques for all to see.
“Boston Magazine” begets a number of smaller secondary publications, some of which have a broader scope while others go into more specifics than the mother publication:
- “Boston Travel” is an annual publication that is very similar to the annual issue listing the Best of Boston awards in the “Boston Magazine” except that it covers all six of the New England states.
- “Boston Home” is a quarterly publication addressing home owners and anyone who is interested in interior design, home decorating, landscaping, and the like.
- “Boston Weddings” is a publication appearing twice a year and is geared toward professional and amateur wedding planners and brides-to-be.
- “Boston Common” is a published quarterly and focuses on the high end designer fashion and the high Bostonian society life.
I have had the privilege of perusing the “Boston Magazine” a few years ago and loved it! And I am not even a Bostonian.
