Boston Medical Center

Boston Medical Center - Located in the historic South End of Boston, Massachusetts, Boston Medical Center (BMC) was founded in 1855 as a not for profit academic medical center licensed for nearly six hundred (600) beds and became the first municipal hospital in the United. Affiliated primarily with the Boston University School of Medicine where every member of the hospital’s medical staff holds an academic appointment, Boston Medical Center is internationally recognized as a leader in pioneering medical research in such areas as Sickle Cell Anemia, infectious disease, cardiology, vascular biology, Parkinson’s disease, geriatrics, endocrinology, hematology and oncology.

Boston Medical Center is the leading community-based safety net hospital on the United States east coat whose sound motto and firm commitment is to provide “exceptional care without exception”, whose mission is to “provide consistently excellent and accessible health services to all in need of care regardless of status and ability to pay” (in 2007 they provided nearly $240 million in free health care to uninsured patients), whose vision is to address medical requirements of Bostonians and residents of Boston’s neighboring districts by affording a wide spectrum of excellent health care to all, particularly the vulnerable populations and, last but not least, whose professional and medical staff is dedicated to make visitors’ experiences as pleasant as is possible.

Visited by well over 120,000 patients annually, Boston Medical Center has the largest Level One trauma center in New England which is open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and all year round. Boston Medical Center also provides a complete range of pediatric care specializing in epilepsy, spinal arthritis, Crohn’s and colitis, Parkinson’s disease and coronary artery disease as well as equally all-inclusive adult health care services. In 2006, Boston Medical Center opened the Moakley Building which was named after the late Congressman John Joseph Moakley and is considered the best in-class centralized cancer and ambulatory care facility in New England. This extraordinary building houses many programs and specialty services such as a comprehensive diagnostic and treatment for cancer, digestive disorders and otolaryngology disorders, a breast health center, and a state-of-the-art ambulatory surgery center.

Boston Medical Center provides a complete scope of inpatient, clinical and diagnostic services in excess of seventy (70) medical specialties and subspecialties that include but is not limited to cardiac care and surgery, hypertension, neurological care, orthopedics, geriatrics and women’s health. And all these medical services are provided on an annual average to more than thirty thousand (30,000) admitted patients and just about one million (1,000,000) visiting patients by the approximately thirteen hundred (1,300) committed physicians, six hundred and sixty (660) residents and fellows, sixteen hundred (1,600) compassionate nurses and forty five hundred (4,500) well trained non-medical full time employees.

Boston Medical Center also offers the community valuable outreach programs and services such as screenings for skin cancer, testing for cholesterol, checking of blood pressure, early detection of prostate cancer, bone density testing for osteoporosis, eye examinations, counseling for smoking termination and flu vaccinations as well as cancer education and prevention seminars.

Boston Medical Center takes pride in its multi-cultural and multi-ethnic patient population and bridges the language gap by offering the largest Interpreter Services in thirty (30) different languages which are available around the clock. In 2007 this interpreter service assisted in over 194,400 interactions.
